The Prequel: Wife’s Take On Son’s Digestive Distress
Yesterday, John sent out an email explaining how our son, Jonah, was up last night with digestive problems. And so were we (up, that is).
If you missed the email you can read it here:
My husband conveniently forgot to mentionn that I had already tried some remedies before I roused him out of his cozy cocoon. I thought you might find it useful to know some other strategies for dealing with digestive distress (for yourself or your children).
As Mamma Lion I raced into Jonah’s room as soon as he started screaming. Dada Lion was still snoring.
Jonah had turned into a crying cub. He had no speech except screeching. I listened to his breathing. And felt his neck and body for a temperature.
That’s when I heard the exploding gas.
So I started rubbing his stomach in circles — for almost 10 minutes.
Next, I retrieved digestion enzyme and melatonin. I mixed them in a cup of (room temperature) water.
Then, I followed up with more tummy rubbing and back rubbing. His moans of displeasure continued for another half an hour.
As a last resort, I went for baking soda and water.
Another 15 minutes went by with no relief.
That’s when I decided that I would have to get Dada Lion. John’s willing to execute tummy “torture” exercises. From past experience we found these exercises would rouse loud protests from Jonah. But they’d help pass the gas. And help us all go back to sleep eventually.
Being a parent makes us have to do things that may cause temporary discomfort for our children. But in the end makes life less challenging for them.
Still, even better, is just avoiding such challenges all together.
We haven’t had a digestive emergency like this with Jonah for nearly two years. And we have Dr. Helen Thomas to thank for that. Back when he was three, every night was like this.
But as long as we follow Dr. Helen’s dietary and lifestyle recommendations, everybody’s digestion is relatively calm and quiet.
So, I too vouch for Dr. Helen Thomas’ Colon Karma Cure Program (click here). If you haven’t already, please check it out.

P.S. I do disagree with John that the yeast in the bread was what caused Jonah’s gut trouble. In Ayurveda they teach that everything has different “textures.” We toasted the bread way too much. Plus it had a hard crust. So its texture became very dry. People with digestive problems tend to already have body’s that lean towards dryness. Then add to that the dry winter weather we’ve been experiencing. Too much dryness built up in Jonah’s body. A dry digestive system can’t work properly.
P.P.S. In Dr. Helen Thomas’ Colon Karma Cure program she teaches you exactly which foods are dry and which are not. Eat the wrong foods and a weak digestive system becomes nightmarish. Eat the right foods and the gut heals and becomes strong and calm. Find out which foods heal and which impair.
